Lesson 28 of 30 · 10 min

Creative testing that produces answers

Test ideas, not decorations.

Creative is the biggest lever you control

Bids and placements are increasingly automated; the message is not. Across most accounts the gap between the best and worst creative is far larger than the gap between good and bad bidding, which is why creative deserves the most testing effort.

Test propositions, not button colours

Comparing two headlines that say the same thing produces a result you cannot use. Compare genuinely different claims — speed against price, reassurance against novelty — so that whichever wins teaches you something about your customer.

One variable, enough volume, a decision rule

Change one thing, run until each variant has enough conversions to separate from the other, and decide in advance what margin would count as a win. Calling a test after fifty conversions per side is usually calling the weather.

Write down what the winner taught you

The value of a test is the principle, not the file. "Specific delivery promises beat generic quality claims" transfers to email, landing pages and every future campaign; "ad 4B won" does not.

Takeaway

Test different ideas rather than different decorations, and record the principle the winner proved.
