Lesson 3 of 30 · 8 min
The funnel is a diagnostic, not a map
Use it to find the broken step, not to describe real behavior.
Real journeys are messy
Nobody moves cleanly from awareness to consideration to purchase. People loop, pause for months, ask a friend, and arrive through a channel that gets none of the credit. The funnel is a simplification, and treating it as a literal description of behavior leads to plans that over-fund the last visible step.
Its real value is locating the break
The funnel earns its keep as a diagnostic. Impressions but no clicks points at audience or creative. Clicks but no conversions points at the landing experience, the offer, or broken tracking. Conversions but no revenue points at pricing or product fit. Each symptom has a different fix.
Match the metric to the stage
Upper-funnel activity should be judged on reach, incremental exposure, and brand measures — not on last-click sales. Lower-funnel activity should be judged on cost per qualified outcome. Judging an awareness campaign by last-click CPA reliably kills the work that feeds everything below it.
Fix the earliest broken step first
Weakness upstream caps everything downstream. If the audience is wrong, better landing pages cannot save the plan. Work down the chain in order and you avoid optimizing a step that was never the constraint.
Takeaway
Read the funnel as a chain of evidence and repair the earliest broken link.
